Homemade chai. Is there anything more heavenly? If you’ve never made it before, I highly suggest you get your butt in the kitchen. RIGHT NOW! You probably have everything you need already. If you don’t, it’s all easily found at your grocery or health food store!
I always have fresh ginger and cinnamon sticks. The combination of the two makes my absolute FAVORITE healing tea, just add honey. <3 The other components are things I always have on hand because I do a lot of pickling and cooking of my favorite cuisine, INDIAN FOOD!!!!
Okay, so this is what you’ll need:
Homemade White Chai
- 1-2 tbs quality loose-leaf white tea (or black tea for traditional Chai!)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3-4 slices of fresh ginger
- 6 black peppercorns
- 4-5 cardamom pods
- 6 whole cloves
- 1 star anise
- filtered water
- honey, coconut sugar, or organic raw sugar – to taste
- vanilla almond milk (or whatever milk or cream you have on hand!)
First off, fill your kettle with filtered water and bring to a boil. While you wait, smash the peppercorns, cardamom pods, and cloves with your mortar and pestle (or just put them in a plastic bag and whack ‘em with a rolling pin!). Add all ingredients (minus the honey and cream!) to your teapot. I have a glass teapot that includes an internal filter. If you don’t have a filter, you can always strain your tea after it’s steeped. Once the water is just to a boil, pour over the tea and spices. Let steep about 20 minutes or so. Strain, then add sweetener and cream to taste! (Makes about 5-6 cups of tea.)
Enjoy your homemade Chai!!!! XOXO
